ALMOST TWO YEARS

It has been one year and 9 months since I was here.

It's like I just got here yesterday. Time flies...

Today I just got my reappointment letter for the third year to work here. I feel quite happy about that.

The thing I want to share today is,
Although the work load is quite heavy and the work time is quite long, being a medical physicist is still much more fun than I thought. For an engineer like me who used to work in some places has little chances to meet female colleagues, working an engineer in a hospital is definitely a brilliant idea. An article in Scientific American mentioned, the most important thing to make an expert mind is the motivation. Yeah, motivation! Once you got motivation, you can make yourself an expert.

So, you guys may ask me, how long will I keep this motivation?
I shall say, as long as those colleagues are HOT~~

It's a common greeting phrase used between people here. When I was just here, I always tried to figure out something to reply this greeting. I think I need to tell something to be nice. Thanks GOD, Friday is almost there...

Since I was starting the clinical rotation, it became quite busy. Besides, we also started the annual QA recently, so you can imagine how tight the schedule is.

The clinical stuffs are quite interesting, especially I can see more places and people. Although seeing some patient may not be so exciting, however it is still very fresh to me. One thing I have to mention again, there are bunches of hot girls in this hospital, really, lots of...

CLINICAL ROTATION

I've been starting my clinical rotation since this Monday.

ROOSEVELT ISLAND

This is where I live in NYC.
People usually see the pictures taken from the west side, because it's easy to take some on the tram. However, if you want to see the other view, you have to walk onto the Queensboro bridge. That's what I was doing last Saturday. I walked all the way to Queens and took some pictures on the bridge.

我家小民之紅顏禍水

來到紐約這麼久, 今天終於找到機會去現場看跟我同梯的阿民的比賽. 阿民真不愧是台灣之光, 到處都可以看到台灣人.

不用我說, 大家應該都知道, 阿民這場投的不好, 洋基也打得不好, 被曬成跟豬頭一樣, 還沒看到贏球, 實在是很鬱悶. 唯一慶幸的事就是沒有買太貴的票, 不然看到輸球實在會很ooxx.

今天小民會輸球, 我認真檢討後發現, 應該歸咎於洋基球場辣妹實在是太多了, 古語有云, 紅顏禍水, 一點兒都沒錯. 坐在我旁邊的一個韓國妹, 搞不清楚狀況, 皮膚幼咪咪, 白拋拋的, 搞得我實在沒辦法專心為小民加油. 實在是...

ALMIGHTY!!

You guys should know that I have subscribed the playboy magzine since I was here.

This magzine is delivered with a hearty consideration, which is the magzine delivered in a sealed and opaque plastic bag. It can prevent those hot girls on the cover to be seen and nobody will know that you are the guy who subscribe Playboy. Because the bottom page is usually for some commercials of cigar or wine, the plastic bag has only one opaque side. I believe God listened to my pray. I recieved the latest issue last evening, so those hot girls come directly to my place. However, something happened. The bottom page of this issue is a commerical for Volkswagon. They want to prompt their new car "rabbit" and emphasize "the rabbit is back", so they put the back of the cover page of this issue. There are three hot girls on the cover page, therefore you can imagine there are three cute butts on the bottom page. The picture is as shown below.
Do you notice that? The issue is still in that opaque plastic bag. However, there is only one opaque side. So, everybody knew it is a playboy in that bag.... What should i say?? I guess you guys will say, Yabee. Yeah, exactly, yabee....

AAPM 06 - My poster

Purpose: To develop a Monte Carlo dose calculation engine for electron beams that is feasible for routine clinical treatment planning.
Method and Materials: The dose calculation engine consists of a description of the clinical beams and a dose calculation module. A 12-component multi-source model was used to characterize the phase-space of the clinical beams. There are 6 components for each electrons and photons, corresponding to the 3 scrapers, x-jaws, y-jaws, and the direct component respectively. In addition, we have developed a method to account for the presence of arbitrary shaped cutout by modifying the last component of the standard beam model. For the dose calculation module, implementation of the Super-Monte Carlo method accelerates the calculation by using electron and photon tracks pre-calculated in water to avoid the computationally intensive sampling processes. These tracks are replayed in the patient computer model as defined by CT. To account for inhomogeneities, the step size and scattering angle were adjusted according to the CT voxel values and material indexes. The dose calculation engine was verified by comparing with film measurements in several different geometries.
Results: The results agreed with film measurements to within a few percent both in homogeneous and heterogeneous phantoms. Our method is faster than the analog Monte Carlo calculation by a factor of 6 to 10 and is comparable in performance to a commercial system. The modified beam models for arbitrary cutouts can be derived in a few seconds. The disk storage for pre-calculated tracks is about 5.5 GB and 125 MB for the standard beam models.
Conclusion: The developed Monte Carlo calculation engine is highly accurate and efficient. The disk space and computational time required are well within clinical acceptability. It is a highly promising dose calculation tool for routine clinical applications.

A MEDICAL PHYSICIST

After the annual meeting of AAPM this year, I deeply recognize that how much I love this job.

It recalled all the passion I had in 1995, the first time I told my advisor that I wanted to do something about medical physics. Although I didn't make it at that moment, several years later I finally entered this field. Thanks GOD~
There is another thing makes me so happy to work in hospital. When I was in the elevator this morning, there were 8 girls with me. It's unbelievable especially to those guys who used to work in INER(http://www.iner.gov.tw). What should I say?? The only thing I want to say is "It's never too late to make a change".
